About the book

The recent pace of change in software development has been extraordinary.

Tools that once offered little more than autocomplete can now produce complex features, refactor applications, and automate substantial portions of the development process.

AI has permanently altered the landscape of web engineering.

PHP Brilliance offers a practical response to that new reality. Instead of relying on reactive debugging and patchwork fixes, the book teaches a preventative mindset focused on writing robust PHP applications from the outset. Its goal is to help developers and teams reduce bugs, improve delivery confidence, and create software that remains stable under real-world pressure.

The book also addresses a growing concern within the industry: the decline of hands-on coding fluency.

As senior developers increasingly supervise AI-generated code rather than write every line themselves, technical instincts can begin to weaken. The coding muscle, when not exercised regularly, can atrophy.

PHP Brilliance serves as both a technical guide and a skills refresher, helping developers retain the depth of understanding that automation alone cannot replace.

Thunder started coding in the early '80s, beginning with Sinclair BASIC on the ZX Spectrum. The act of creating fuelled a lifelong passion for coding and developing software.

Over the decades, he has evolved through various programming languages taking in the likes of PERL and Java along the way.

With the release of PHP 3 back in 1998, he focussed on this new language, enjoying the simplicity of the syntax and the immediacy of the results.

Then, in 2005, PHP 5 brought along a more coherent and sensible object model. This was the point where he made it his preferred language of choice for developing commercial applications. This journey has led him to become a seasoned developer with a deep understanding of the language and its ecosystem.

When not developing software, Thunder is a keen gamer, woodland volunteer and classical pianist. He's also partial to the odd pint of Guinness.
